As a graduate student in Fisheries and the University of Washington, STEVE MATHEWS had the great opportunity to go to Alaska for high seas salmon research. This got him to Bristol bay, where he learned about the fishing industry. Crew jobs there and elsewhere taught him much more. He had a joint career fishing his own boats and in academia as a fishing researcher and teacher. Some of his best students became commercial fishermen and life-long friends. In retirement, Stve and his wife Dee have made their home in southeastern Alaska, where he has gillnetted salmon for about 30 years. He launched his poetry career in 2011.
